Here’s a wonderful group hailing from Malin in County Donegal, Ireland called “The Henry Girls“.
The Henry Girls are Joleen, Lorna and Karen McLaughlin – and have been performing professionally for over ten years now. ”December Moon” is the groups’ fourth album, following 3 previous releases “Between Us” (2002), “Morning Rush” (2007) and “Dawn” in (2009).
December Moon is a well crafted, melodious collection of 14 songs that are difficult to generalize into one neat genre, as are the band themselves.
So what do you get? The Girls seamlessly (and effortlessly) journey through folk, bluegrass, roots and americana as well as having a genuine Irish/Celtic feel. While they are gifted musicians in their own right- Karen plays fiddle, guitar, viola, banjo and ukulele. Joleen plays harp, mandolin and piano. Lorna plays some piano, accordion and chimes on a few tracks- the main thing I notice with these ladies are their amazing vocal harmonies. As one might expect of three sisters singing together for years, their harmonies and melody lines are outstanding and really give the songs added dimension with the musicality and the lyrics.
I have my favorite tracks but hesitate to tell you what they are. I invite you, the listener, to check them out for yourself and see what you think. I do know that this album and The Henry Girls are a top notch, polished act and when the music is good, it’s good!
